Mary Brogan '70  After graduation from Immaculate, Mary received her BA from Boston College and her MEd from the University of Maryland.  She taught Special Ed in a number of different settings and school systems before raising her 6 children became a full-time job.  Mary and her husband, Steve, have been passionate supporters of all levels of Catholic education.  After their youngest child, Theresa, was born with Down syndrome and welcomed into the parish school her siblings attended, Mary focused on making that same experience a reality for other families with intellectual disabilities.  Through her work with the Catholic Coalition for Special Education, Mary works with schools and with families in the Archdioceses of Washington D.C. and Baltimore to successfully include students with developmental and intellectual disabilities, embracing the God-given gifts of every learner as they together reflect the Body of Christ.  In addition, Mary has served on the Archdiocese of Washington's CYO Board as well as the Board of St. Joseph's House and is presently a Trustee of the Academy of the Holy Cross in Kensington.

John '73 John attended St. Aloysius grade school in Caldwell, Immaculate Conception High School, Kean College, and received a BA from Montclair State and a MA from Caldwell College. He is the son of Peter and Veronica Finnegan and comes from a large family of 10, seven boys and three girls. (Pete, Pat, Kathie, Joe, Mary, Bob, John, Ray, Jim, and Ronnie.) John bartended at the Torn Hat in West Orange for 15 years for IC alums Art and Carolyn Tierney. He began his career in education teaching Physical Education at St. Thomas Moore in Fairfield and St. Valentine in Bloomfield. He began his coaching career in 1976 at Immaculate, coaching track, and then freshman football at Essex Catholic in 1979. In 1986, ICHS hired John as Head Football Coach and Social Studies teacher. He later served as IC's Athletic Director for 15 years. In 2003 John's career was taken to Seton Hall Prep, as Head Football Coach and U.S. History teacher. He returned to coach at his alma mater in 2019, completing 30 years as a head coach. John has had a 38-year career in Catholic education.
The Star-Ledger has named John "2021 Outdoor Coach of the Year" in Track, "2023 Essex County Indoor Coach of the Year," and "Essex County Coach of the Decade" ('90s.) His other awards are NJ Milesplit 2023 NJ Team of the Year-Seton Hall Prep, and NJ Milesplit-Coach of the Year 2023.

He is a member of the Immaculate Hall of Fame and the Essex County Coaches Hall of Fame. He has also been honored by the National Football Foundation, the Mercier Club, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
John is happily married to his wife Ann (Ciccotti) who comes from a family of eleven. They honeymooned in Ireland. They have three children: Nolan, Jacqueline, and Bryan, and reside in Caldwell with their three dogs, Cujo, Kobe, and Bo. Ann and John enjoy the shore, auctions, visits to Sussex County, long drives, car shows, and concerts.

Ray '74 and Lucille (Giammella) Finnegan '76  Ray was born in 1956, the son of Peter & Veronica Finnegan. His dad was born in County Monaghan, Ireland, in 1910, and immigrated to the United States in 1928. He grew up in Caldwell and  attended St. Aloysius School. As a boy Ray learned the ethic of hard work from his six brothers and parents. During the grammar school years he completed odd jobs for neighbors and others, worked at the Grover Cleveland birthplace, and was a paperboy, following in the footsteps of his older brothers. He and his dad spent nights and weekends building a wood and canvas canoe. After completion, they gained a permit from Essex County to launch and use the lake at Verona Park with his brother Jim. Ray was also a boy scout, with his brother Joseph as scoutmaster.
Ray attended Immaculate and played football and baseball, and ran track. He attended Seton Hall University for a short period before his work life began. He traveled two summers with Father Francis Burla to several western states. Fr. B / Fr. Frank became a great family friend and married and baptized many of the family.

Ray married his wife,  Lucille (Giammella) '76,  in 1979. They initially lived in Brick, NJ, but relocated to Dublin, Ohio in 1995. They raised four children, who attended St. Brendan School in Hilliard, Ohio and St. Brigid of Kildare in Dublin, where they are still parishioners today and Ray is a member of the Knights of Columbus. 

Lucille is a graduate of both Immaculate Conception Grammar School AND High School, where she was a cheerleader for four years.  After graduation she attended cosmetology school and has been a stylist for her entire career. Her volunteer activities include preparing meals at the Memorial Tournament in Muirfield Village (donating her compensation to Nationwide Children's Hospital), and being team manager and videographer for all of the teams in which her children were involved. She has operated many salons in Columbus-area retirement communities and currently operates Darby Glen in Hilliard and New Albany Rehabilitation Center in New Albany. Lucille is committed to rescuing abandoned dogs, most of whom she has fostered and adopted as part of the family!

Ray's career has included Territory Manager at Therma-Tru Doors, Territory, Regional & National Sales Manager of The Shield Family CO's ( Peachtree Doors & Windows, Weather Shield, Vetter, Visions, Crestline), and National Account Executive at  GridPoint, Inc. He can proudly say he has donated over four gallons of blood and is working on number five!
Ray has maintained his love for sports by coaching youth baseball, hockey and lacrosse, and has served on the Capital Amatuer Hockey Association Board for five years, two years as President. During his term as President he received licensing from the National Hockey League to have teams skate as the CAHA Capitals, consisting of 18 house teams, and CAHA Columbus Blue Jackets consisting of 9 travel teams.  In his spare time he enjoys sailing and golf (admittedly a much better sailor!) and has volunteered at the Memorial Tournament and President's Cup at Muirfield Village in Dublin.

Ray and Lucille appreciate the love and support of all of Finnegan siblings throughout the years, especially during the rebuilding of their home following Hurricane Sandy. They are proud of their family dedication to Special Olympics, and look forward to all future summers in Lavalette, NJ.

Jim '76  Jim is the President of Growth Restaurants, LLC of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, operating The Famished Frog Restaurant, Legends Sports Bar, and HOPS Craft Beer & Wine Bar in Morristown, and The Thirsty Turtle Restaurants in Florham Park and Cranford. Jim grew up in Essex County - living in Caldwell and attending Immaculate Conception High
School in Montclair. He is the ninth child in a family of ten siblings (seven boys and three girls). Jim learned his strong work ethic from his father while assisting his dad on projects around their Caldwell home and the family rental home in Lavallette, which is now a family vacation home that he shares with his siblings.

Jim began his hospitality career in 1976 as a waiter and maître d for the Robin Hood Inn in Clifton. He then managed the Magic Pan restaurants in Paramus Park Mall in Paramus and Riverside Square Mall in Hackensack. Jim joined Growth Restaurants in 1983 and became General Manager of The Office Restaurant in Montclair. While at The Office Jim was an assistant varsity football coach for Immaculate Conception High School for six years.

Jim married the late Linda Smith (they met at Montclair State University) in 1987. Each of heir children was born in conjunction with a change in Jim's responsibilities at Growth:  Nicole (33), with the opening of Willie's Taverne in Bedminster; Shannon (31) with the opening of Readington Roadhouse in Readington Township, Kathleen (29) when Jim took
over Growth Catering (Off-Premise Catering Division) in Millington, Victoria (27) with the opening of the Thirsty Turtle in Bernardsville, and James Jr (25) with the opening of The Famished Frog in Morristown. They have been residents of the Stirling section of Long Hill Township for over 30 years. Jim is also Pop Pop to two grandsons, Bennett, 2 and Connor, 3
months.
Jim has been an active volunteer in his community.  He coached grammar school basketball for four years and re-established the Girls High School CYO Basketball program after it was dormant for three years. At St. Vincent de Paul School in Stirling, he served as the Athletic Director and President of the Association of Students Activities. Jim was also Chairman of the Renaissance Project, raising over $50,000 to renovate the school's "Cafegymatorium" (multi-use area) and developed a new school sports mascot logo for the Marketing Committee. In 2005 he received the Hospitality Good Scout Award
from the Patriot's Path Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
Jim has served on the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Restaurant Association, The Raritan Valley Community College Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management Program Advisory Board, Restaurants and Institutions Product Evaluation Panel, The New Jersey Restaurant Association's Educational Foundation, The Somerset Chamber of Commerce Board of Tourism, and The Business and Education Partnership of Somerset/Hunterdon Counties Teacher in the Workplace program.

The Finnegan family holds a special place in the hearts of IC family members. Their allegiance to Immaculate did not end with graduation and their dedication to each other is evident in all that they do. Words and phrases like "incredible generosity," "commitment to youth and to humanity," "love one another," "family first," "values/faith," and, of course, "sense of humor/Irish Blarney," are synonymous with each of them!

THE "HEART OF A LION" AWARD

...presented annually at the Blue and White Gala to a member of the Immaculate family who "exemplifies the values set forth by the founding Sisters of Charity and who has achieved a lifetime of distinguished service and unmitigated spirit...one who truly possesses the "Heart of a Lion."

The Malkinskis - An IC Family!

Michael '73, Katherine '74, Andrew '76, Thomas '78, Edward '82, Steven '85, and Brian McCrone '98 

Ann and Andrew Malkinski  lovingly welcomed seven children (in true Irish/Polish tradition!) and settled in the Downtown section of East Orange.  The children attended Holy Name of Jesus grammar school which was a well-known feeder school for Immaculate Conception! 
The Malkinski/Immaculate connection began in 1969 when Father Frank Burla "recruited" Michael to help restart the football program. That connection continued years later with Father Burla marrying each of the Malkinski children.  "Mrs. Mal" attended Our Lady of the Valley but converted from a Valley Knight to an IC Lion.  She became legendary by ringing her cowbell at various sporting events while annoying our opponents and embarrassing her children at the same time!  She also worked as a part-time secretary at IC ensuring that Edward and Steven stayed out of trouble.

"Mr. Mal" was a proud Navy man and World War II vet as well as a hardworking East Orange Fire Captain who made sure his voice was heard at IC games.
In addition to the PRDE the Malkinski family has for their Immaculate Conception relationship, they are extremely proud of the Eddie Mal Association,  The family started the organization after losing brother Edward to cancer at the age of 33 in 1996.  The Eddie Mal Association is a non-profit charitable organization.  The family's goal is to continue "Eggy's" goodwill and free spirit by benefiting others through various gifts of charity.  The organization has raised over $250,000 for friends and families in need.

Michael '73  After playing three sports and helping resurrect the IC football program, Mike went on to play at Seton Hall University and Montclair State, where he received his BS in Marketing.  While working for AT&T, Mike met the love of his life, Kathleen. After honeymooning in Ireland, they quickly started their family, welcoming Norah, Christine, and Kelly.  Mike returned to IC in 1980 to coach his brothers, Edward and Steven, in football where he continued to coach for almost 40 years.  After 40 years with AT&T, Mike retired from corporate life, however, retirement didn't last long.  The Immaculate community decided it was the right time to leverage his business experience and dedication to IC, electing him as its third President.  After close to two years in that role, Mike shifted to the Business Manager role and now continues to regularly "consult" at IC.   Mike is active with his church and community activities.  He and Kathy enjoy traveling, summertime in Lavalette, and entertaining family and friends at their home in East Hanover.   

Katherine '74  After graduating from ICHS, Kathy went to work at Gibraltar Savings and Loan in Vailsburg.  This may sound silly, but the love of her life, Michael, walked into the bank one day!  They were married at Immaculate Conception Church by Father Burla.  Their three children, Brian, Laura, and Marianne, were baptized there as well.  Kathy was elected to the IC Hall of Fame in 2016. Her bowling skills and cheerleading are still a topic of discussion among her brothers!  Currently Kathy and Michael spend their retired life shuffling between the Jersey shore and North Jersey where they enjoy their grandchildren, Aiden and Bryce.  Kathy is grateful and blessed to have a life filled with faith, family, and friends.  "No one is a failure who has friends." (It's a Wonderful Life)

Andrew '76  BEST CLASS EVER (per Andrew...)
Andrew attended Rutgers University and Montclair State after leaving IC.  He joined the Bloomfield Fire Department in 1979 and retired as a Captain after 30 years of service. While on the fire department, he joined the Montclair Rugby Club and eventually played with his four brothers. Andrew met and married a most wonderful and understanding woman, the lovely Donna DenBraven of Nutley, NJ.  They had two children, Andrew E. and Elizabeth (Lizzy.) Since retiring, Andrew has played a lot of golf (three holes in one...) and travels with Donna and friends.

Thomas '78  "T Mal" worked for Prudential before following his family's legacy and joining the Bloomfield Fire
Department. He retired after 30 years of service as Deputy Chief. He continues his desire for firefighting by working at the Morris County Fire Academy.  During his time at the Pru, Tom met a fellow named Mark Keown who convinced Tom to join his rugby team.  That triggered the five Mal boys to eventually join the Montclair Rugby Club as well. The Malkinskis made an indelible mark on the club as well as their bodies!  Tom has been honored as the 2015 Deputy Grand Marshall of the West Orange Saint Patrick's Parade, the 2016 Essex County Emerald Firefighter of the Year, and the 2022 Shillelagh Man of the Year.  Thomas resides in Parsippany with his lovely wife of 33 years, Kathleen.  They have two children, Thomas Patrick ("T Pat") and Molly.

Edward '82  Edward was a four-year mainstay on the IC football team. He was continuously involved in IC school activities like the school play ("Anything Goes") and there were a few social events at the family home and elsewhere.  His obsession with the Grateful Dead led him to traveling across the country.  After graduation, "Eggy" followed his dream and joined the U.S. Navy where he traveled the world.  After his Honorable Discharge, he continued his life of service by becoming a Newark firefighter.  Edward was a free spirit who spent his life bringing joy and laughter (funniest Malkinski?) to everyone he knew and loved.  After he passed away in 1996, used his spirit  to form the Eddie Mal Association which has supported many firefighter families and friends throughout the years.

Steven '85  Steven followed his five siblings to IC - he didn't have much of a choice!  He played football and baseball at a high level.  "Pitt" attended Lincoln Tech following graduation which led to a career as a union sprinkler fitter.  Like his brothers before him, Steven then joined the Bloomfield Fire Department.  He also followed his best friend (and brother), Edward, in his love for the Grateful Dead.  He was very involved in establishing the Eddie Mal Association.  Steven married Lisa at Immaculate Conception and they were blessed with Alicia, Mackenzie, Daniel, and Morgan.  We lost Steven in 2019 and he is dearly missed as he was a wonderful son, brother, husband, and father, loved by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him.

Brian '98 Brian McCrone is a second-generation Lion, following in the footsteps of his mother, Katherine Malkinski. McCrone, and five uncles.  His father, Michael McCrone, went to Essex Catholic (we won't hold that against him...)  During his four years at IC, he was captain of the cross country and baseball teams and lettered in four sports (cross country for three years, baseball for three years, basketball for three years, and football for one year - his senior year when his uncle Michael coached him! ) Brian is still sorry about leaving cross country and his coach, Mr. Dyer.  Brian was named Student-Athlete of the Year and the baseball team's MVP as a senior. Brian graduated from the College of New Jersey in 2002 and spent 20 years as a journalist, including stints at the Philadelphia Inquirer and NBC.  In 2022, he joined Westinghouse Electric Co., a nuclear energy company, as an external communications manager.  He currently resides in Brunswick, Maine, with his wife Heather.  He is in a book club that includes JoAnn Degnan, his favorite teacher at Immaculate, who taught him English and Creative Writing, and James Lauterhahn '89, Brian's great friend and mentor.

The Malkinski family is large in number, but even larger in "heart." Having contributed three generations of love, grace, and service to ICHS, they have enabled our little gem on Cottage Place to shine!  Michael, in particular, provided key stewardship during his tenure as our President when faced with the overwhelming challenges of the Covid years. Their leadership and dedication to others is not only demonstrated at Immaculate, but also with their establishment of the Eddie Mal Association.
